So how about that AWD Christini?

Dirtbike in one of the newish issues of dirtrider for under 7 grand?  Honestly if I had the money to get a new bike it'd either be one of those or a new KTM 250SX.  The only thing I don't like about them are the extra parts and weight.  It's more stuff to replace and you can only buy it from Christini afaik.

But still how sweet would it be to have a brand new AWD 450 for less than a 450 from one of the big 5?

This is an amazing concept. It's essentially like racing a rear wheel drive car around tight corners, and then being given a Subaru STi. My only concern is maintenance, and lack of qualified service techs to work on these bikes. Here's a cool clip of Geoff Aaron riding one at Endurocross.

The actual design of them is pretty solid, it's just more parts to replace.  It doesn't look like they'd be hard to service either.  But the main thing I was talking about is that you can now get one brand new for LESS than the cost of a brand new 450 from the other 5 manufacturers.  Vs. having to buy a new bike + the AWD stuff for >$10k

Edit:  Put in $2500 for a decent used Honda 450, then $3600 for AWD and you're already $6k in on on USED bike conversion.  So $7k for a BRAND NEW bike w/ AWD is pretty sweet.

They have very attractive pricing, based on what you get. The 300 has essentially a GasGas motor, so they are doing something right in that production dept.

They are sweet. But it is hard to beat parts availability for the big name brands. I'm sure that awd adds a whole new experience to the ride that would help in many aspects of riding.

If it's the same price as a regular dirt bike, I reckon that's pretty good buying.

Like you I have reservations with the possible weight and maintenance issues but in the right application, it would be the best thing since sliced bread.

FWIW, Gasgas stuff is quietly becoming more common too, I'd have one.  I believe Bj works in a Gasgas workshop, he couould give us the good oil on them.

I would like to play with 1.but the way I ride. the rear tire slippage saves me at times. like a rear wheel drive car you can powerslide, drift burn out... I rented a Camaro with that all wheel drive anti lock and hated it. this would be another spot to change oil, I watched the video you posted when he took off the rear wheel spun a little spit up dirt the front didnt.is it lower geared? I magine would take a lot of speed away from the bike,

:) yes Bj Maple, have a proper giggle

I used to work at a GasGas dealer last year. moving on to bigger and better things these days. The best thing about the gasgas bikes IMO is their motors.

as for the Christini AWD system I dont believe it takes much power at all away from the bikes. something like 1-3% i believe christini quote.  its also possible to disengage the front drive system completely with the flick of a lever on the bars so if you ever feel the need to go do big power slides its no trouble. but in all honesty the system is amazing, its underdriven to the front wheel so theres no effect from the system untill the rear starts slipping anyway, the front wheel also has a freewheeling sprag clutch in it so you can spin the front wheel without moving the rear. this way engine braking wont have any affect on the front tire and you wont be able to lock the front brake up without locking the rear at the same time I think.

^That has me sold bj, the idea of the flickable on and off and the sort of traction control system, she only goes when the rear slips? Im puttin down bets that we'll start to see these in the enduro scene in the future, i could see them being very popular in the red bull romaniacs or something with alot of creeks and hills

The bike is 7000.  It comes with AWD things on it.  It has a basically Honda engine.  How is that hard to understand?
