orange, green, red or yellow... which color bike to buy???
  • im 36, 6'2, 185#'s...  im an average fit guy for my size.  im a beginner that knows the basics of riding, but no real experience other than running around in a field a few times.  i owned a few harleys in the past, that hardly ever got ridden, and have been on a few dirt bikes, but nothing extensive at all!!!  unfortunately i have been thrown in every direction by the dealers.  to be 100% honest im at the point where i believe the only real difference in these bikes are the colors!  i have looked at all these: kawasaki kx250f, suzuki 250f, honda crf250, ktm 250 sxf & xcf and have thrown my arms up in research exhaustion, lol...  my son has started riding and seems extremely interested in continuing to ride.  my wife was a rider her entire life, and now that my son has started riding she wants to ride again (she is barely 5' tall and we already bought her a '13 KLX 140L).  we plan to do all types of riding inclusive of trail, open pasture, motocross tracks and more...  i am not afraid to say that i can be intimidated and scared on this future bike!!!  but, im also a little risky too  :)  i do want to learn to ride a wheelie, to go the mx track and jump a bike, and just learn to overall enjoy it!  i fully understand that at my level that will take time, but im more than willing to be patient and get there.  what i dont want to do is buy a new bike and find out 1-2yrs later that i need to re-invest in something bigger.  im pretty set on a 4stroke 250...  just looking for some true riders suggestions on my search, considering my extremely limited riding ability, age, size and future desires.  something i can control now, but let loose on the throttle when my experience allows...  i will be buying a brand new bike....
    thanks for any suggestions!!!

The only thing bigger then the 250 is the 450 in power not body,I think a 250 will do it for you.on what bike to get thats your call, personally I prefer Honda, but cannot go wrong with the Yamaha

Sorry, but satisfying your needs and wants ended the day your son was born, so not wanting to re-invest in another bike in 1-2 years doesn't come up on the radar. Start small and trade up. It's better than getting hurt. (JMO).

I think you'd be fine on a 450, but why not look for a good used 250f and take it from there?

All the bikes you listed are MX bikes except the XCF, and they are all great bikes. The MX bikes are going to be tougher to ride on the trails especially with your wife being on the KLX. There is no one perfect bike so you need to make some decisions about what your main objective is.

Used is a good idea as long as you buy a nice bike and not a money pit, hair is right a mx bike is horrible on the trails, look up crf250x

With honda the X models are trail bikes, you can still Ride your wheelies and go to tracks, get the crf250x or crf450x this way you can have the best of both worlds,

Each bike has its own characteristics, its not just colors, not at all like a car Chevy, Ford, Chrysler they all serve the same purpose but different, get a honda

The 4 stroke definitely nice for being able to putz on trails if need be I have yz250f and all I do is ride trails so any color u choose you wont go wrong. The 450s can be a handful, if u whiskey throttle ur just gona be looking at the sky, then you'll have a close up view of the dirt.

Markypoo I can't believe you said that, all 4 strokes are not good for trails not the MX bikes, dont get the R for trails get the f or the x

Not really normal for a bike to be over heating like that man, I'd get a lower temp thermostat. What other reason are they bad for trails again?

I think the difference in the x model is gearing, electric start, headlight, I'm not sure if it has a radiator fan, flywheel, that's all I can think of rate now

If yall can't ride an MX bike in the trails, Then you need to ride more.

PRACTICE is what makes the rider.

It may be true that the bikes aimed at trail riding only are better for trails only. I have been riding MX bikes for all around riding for upwards of 17 years and have never experienced problems in the trails that I could blame on the bike.

    Ride that thing!!!

Wells here's an equation that is true and proven in regards to the casino. If I have x amount in my pocket and I don't gamble it. 100% of the time I will still have x.

There's casinos all around here now. There actually one prolly 15 min from my house. I just refuse to go. My family live comfortably, were happy with what we got. I could have 5grand in the bank an I never feel like I got $ to burn.
but forget all that is will tell u true story tho.
When I went to college you have to take tests before freshman year even starts to see where you stand with core classes. I aced the math test and wasn't required to take a math course throughout college.

You need a 450for the suspension at 185.  Read the shootouts to see which bike is for you.  The KTM has the best handling, power, brakes and clutch.  The power is right for begginer to expert.  It also holds it's resale value best.

I think them shootouts are payoffs ktm, Yamaha and Honda cant go wrong
  • finally settled on a decision... before i almost spent an extra $3k i didnt need to, i found this one used. i really wanted new, but just in-case i decide to go with something different in the future, im pretty sure this is the more intelligent way to go. the bike is virtually flawless, and the price was a little negotiable as well... let me know your opinions before i pick this up tomorrow evening.
    thanks!!!

Well, I'm glad you went with a 250 to start. :).

I'm not a huge fan of CL marky, but why do you think it's a scam? That's a great deal at $6k and as long as the seller has the paperwork (he should if he bought it new in July of 2012), the buyer should be fine.

I admit - why do all those mods and only ride it for 10 hours does warrant a question or two, but as long as the seller has an explanation, it looks like a good deal. Okay, so almost too good. Okay, so maybe the buyer needs to ask quite a few questions, but there are deals out there.

That's why I say I'm skeptical BC who buys a bike for 8500$, drops a few grand in it then sells it a few months later for a 4500$ loss..... unless it just scared the pants off of him but still.

Does sound crazy now you say it that way,but I orderd alot of Pro Circuit parts for my bike just because, some people like to modify things to there likings,in going with all red accessories, and carbon not need them just want a bjke that stands apart

  • He bought it new from our local ktm dealer... But, it was a leftover 2011, so that may explain a little... I'm getting it for 5500
And feel its a fair deal... Besides, it looks sick! Jmo

Just don't western union him any money. O and if he starts saying stuff like I lost title yada yada. Then most likely he still owe on it. If he don't have title in hand I wouldn't mess with it. BC if he stop paying on it after he sell it bank may come looking for you.
