I usually use mobile-1 10w-40 synthetic oil made specifically for motorcycles. Since i got my 4-stroke 250, i used valvoline sae oil, made for ATV's. My dirtbike is an all terrain vehicle and its safe for my wet clutch and all, should i keep using it or switch to motorcycle oil? And also it is ok to use engine degreaser on my chain after each ride?

Chain care kinda depends on the type of chain you have. Most people say kerosene is the best and safest way to clean a chain. Use either motor oil on roller chain to lube, chain wax on o ring or x ring style chain to lube. Degreaser on an oring or xring style chain is bad. Will most likely crack, rot, deteriorate the rubber seals due to the corrosive nature of degreaser. The seals go. Chain goes shortly there after.

Wd 40 is terrible for oring or xring chain. It penetrates past the seals dilutes the grease inside and evaporates leaving the rollers dry and chain will wearing like crazy. I guess it ok for roller style chain.

I just read about the soaking rubber in wd40. Its really not about the seal itself. From my best understanding its the fact that wd40 is a penetrating degreaser/ mild lubricant. It penetrates past the seal of o ring chain an degreases the lube that comes from the factory that never supposed to get touched by anything. The oring seals in the lube seal out dirt. It eliminates the good lube and leaves its crap mild oil behind which is essentially nothing. I'm sure this don't happen over night but I'm willing to bet it excellerates chain wear.

That why a oring chain only need cleaned an wax BC the factory lube stays inside the ring for life of the chain once it gone its gone. As far as roller style chain wd40 displaces water, it prolly displacing you lube aswell.

I had to tighten the chain on my sons 80 after every ride. That bike or my son was hard on chains and sproks. On a regular chain it's not unusual to have slack after one or 2 rides on a 2 stroke. I'm sure a 450 diesel wears out chains quick.

Nothing wrong with being scientific. If it wasn't for science we'd still be riding two rocks with a tree limb across them. I was just explaining myself better. Fyi maple, Sean using roller style (I'm guessing factory) chain.

what is the difference between oring in X ring chains

Xring seal has twice the contact points half as much contact area meaning more sealing less friction. Seals last longer prolonging chain life.
