Mods To Yz125
  • Hey everyone,

I'm currently 16 years old and I've been riding for around 6 years now, started racing on a 65cc.

Over this time I've trained and put many hours into the track and I have an excellent idea of how everything works on my dirt bike so I have done all the maintenance.  The maintenance includes basic things like cleaning the piston, oil, air filter, carbs, etc.

I now have a 2010 yz125 and its completely stock, except handlebars and clutch levels. (just like my past bikes.)  I can compete with the fastest guys in my local amateur races, but I see a lot of people running different pipes and telling me about v-force reeds, and all these different mods that supposedly transform my bike to become faster.  I've always believed that it was just the rider that would make the bike go faster and you would be wasting your money to buy these more expensive mods.

Am I the one being fooled for believing this, or do aftermarket pipes, different reeds, and different engine mods, etc. actually work?

    Any opinions would be great!

The rider is the biggest difference but with 2 equal riders v force reeds make a difference.  Check out Motocross Action Mag online. They have been riding this bike since 06 and have all the mods worked out.

A Pro Circuit or FMF pipe/silencer will improve engine performance. However, IMO the best improvement you can make on a MX bike is the suspension. Make sure is set up for your weight and ridding style. A good suspension will allow to to go faster, and get less tired.

I agree with gearman. Suspension is really the best modification you can do to a bike.

I agree with the suspension, the stock pipes on those new bikes are great, no need to change them. My rmz250 has a big bore kit made by Athena on it. It gives it and extra 40cc and a good difference in power! You could also get new sprockets that change your gearing so you have better acceleration or higher top speed, whatever you want.

  • Thank you all for the replies.
Everyone who replied is kind of supporting my belief about the whole aftermarket ordeal.  I do agree with @gearman I feel like the suspension is one of the best things you can do, in order to help your riding style.

@rmzdirt7  Thanks for idea about the sprockets that will change acceleration or higher top end speed; I'll take this into consideration.
