I have a 2002 rm125 that will idle while in neutral, but when I pull and hold the clutch and step in to first gear it the engine will slowly shut off after about 5 seconds of not reving. Anyone know what it could be???

when you pull the clutch lever the clutch isn't disengaging all the way. where your clutch cable is going into the leaver, there are nuts you can spin to adjust your clutch. spin them out or in and see what solves your problem. make sure you dont adjust it so its still engaged when you let it out. Its an intricate process.

you could file down the notches... but i'm not sure how long it will last like that, and filing too much can cause problems. best way all around is to replace it with a high quality aftermarket one.

OK... Should I replace clutch plates as well or just the basket?

plates as well. the plate tabs get misshapen where they contact the basket and if you put them on a new basket the misshapen tabs will wear into the new basket faster.

No, there isn't really much play in the lever.

there should be about 1-3mm of play in the clutch lever. but you should still replace the clutch basket, that is whats most likely causing your problem.
