Fox Instinct Boot?
  • I asked that the best boot was a few weeks back because i broke my leg and there are three boots i want to choice from. the Fox Instinct, Gaerne SG12 ( or 10's but more preferably the 12's), and Alpinestar Teach 10. So out of these boots what are the best for ankle movement, and protection. Me and my Dad have done allot of research and cant choose.

in terms of protection only you probably cant beat the gaerne sg12. they're a SOLID boot. they're a bit heavy but they certainly offer a high level of protection. cant comment on the ankle movement for any except the instinct. they're very comfortable boots. the ankle freedom is such that you can walk in them almost like normal work boots.

  • I think that's a tough question to answer.  Most of us have a favorite boot - for me it's the Alpinestars - and since I won't try anything else, I can't comment on other boots.  iIm sure the Gaernes are a great boot, but Fox makes quality products, as well.

I can vouch for the Gaernes. Never used the others.

Depends on what you want in a boot and what you like.  Also, what kind of riding are you doing?

The Gaernes are one of the widest boots on the market.  If you have narrow feet, sometimes it's hard to get them to fit properly.  Like Sidi, they have a dropped footbed which allows for a very narrow toe box without sacrificing protection.  They tend to have great mobility and solid ankle protection.

The Alpine Tech 10's have a narrower toe box than the other Tech series boots, but they are still not as narrow as the Gaernes.  They have an awesome innner bootie with an ankle hinge that offers a lot of support.  The top of the boot is very soft though, so if you ride off-road, I don't really recommend them.  It is easy for sticks to stab through the softer fabric, but for motorcross, they are fine.

The Instinct boots are insanely comfortable.  They break in quickly and easily, and I've only heard very good things form people about them.  They have a narrower toe box than other Fox boots, and tend to be a little wider on the footprint too.  The sole is developed of a very specific type of rubber that is designed to absorb impact and minimize the effects of rough landings.  Like the Tech 10's, the fabric is softer (not the hard plastic like Gaernes) so for off-road riding, where sticks and rocks come into play, they might not be the best choice. But for motocross, all the way!
