• Can anyone help me please i have recently baught myself a ktm 125sx 2004 model. And when i was out today i had giving my friend a shot and the bike had died out on him he tryed kicking it a few times but it was just making a screaching noise. At first we had faught it was just needing engine oil so we went to the petrol garage and got some but after we put the oil in we put it in 2nd gear and rocked the bike back and fowrad to get it flowing throo and into the moving parts. Once we did tht i gave the bike a kick and it started but but it did not sound good. It sounded like a tractor. Infact it sounded like there was a rock inside the engine getting knocked about everywhere. I know it wont be that. But my friend knows more about bikes than me and when he was having a look at it he says by the sound it was making he thinks it could be the crank bearings. I was thinking it was needing a new piston kit but like i says i dont know much about bikes i just know how to ride them. All the gear and no idea haha!! Any help is much appericiated.

Was it low on engine oil, or did you just put some in for general principle?   It doesn't sound good, that's for sure!   A broken ring makes an awful noise, and hopefully this is all that is wrong with the bike.   Don't start it again!  You will have to do a tear-down of the top end to determine what the damage is.  There are other areas besides the top end or the crank that could be making awful noises.   It sounds to me like you are not well prepared or capable to do your own repair work on the bike and in this case I think you should take it to a reputable service shop for the repairs.  It will save you some money if you remove the engine from the chassis and take just the engine to them.

  • Hi paul i just recieved your message. Yes the bike was running very low on engine oil so we thaught that might have been the problem and that all it was needing was oil but after we put oil in we soon relised that it was not the issue. My friend came down to my place today and did a tear down of the top end. The good news is that the barrel is fine it does not have a single scratch or mark on it its really smooth and the piston kit is also fine. But the conrod is knocking up and down as if its loose. My friend says it should not be like that he thinks it could be the main bearings but he did not have time to finish it and wont know untill he comes down tomorrow and tears down the bottom end. He said that if the worst comes to the worst it could be a complete new crankshaft that i am needing. Hopefully it wont be that bad and its just the main bearings that i am needing to replace because i have seen a set for £45.

  • Cheers bud. by the way its sounding to you just now do you also think it could be the main bearings? I was also wondering. What would be the best engine oil to use. I really have no idea. The boy that i got the bike from has still got the manual he is going to drop it off to me tomorrow and i think i am going to spend the day researching about my bike. Thank you for getting back to me paul. Its really appreciated ;)

I use BelRay Gear Saver motor oil in my KTM with excellent results; not sure if you get that brand there.  Just make sure it is motorcycle (wet clutch) specific oil.   It sounds like you have a handle on the situation.  It is difficult to make any guesses based on your post here.  It could be more harm than good to get advice on the internet like this.   The good news is that if you get the bottom and top end work that it needs done you should be good to go for a lot of hours of fun on that bike!  Remember to keep your air filter cleaned and oiled regularly and change your engine oil when it gets old.

if the rod has up and down play then the connecting rod bearing is bad.

the rod bearing will nearly always wear out before the main crank bearings.

  • Cheers paul. I have had a quote earlier on for £160 with the way the engine is sitting at the moment. that was from a service shop near where i live so i am thinking about just taking it to them. I cant wait to get back out on it. Hopefully that will be soon. Thank you once again for you help paul. Cheers bud
  • (NZrider) yeh the rod has up and down play in it mate. Does this mean that i would need a complete new crankshaft ?

not necessarily. crankshafts can be rebuilt with a new rod, bearing and pin.
