A very small amount of oil is leaking out of the bottom of the stator cover on my 2001 CR 250. It only leaks when the bike is running.
Is oil even supposed to be on that side? If not, what could be causing it and how serious could it be?

Possibly a crank seal.  I know my CRF250 had oil on that side of the motor, but my KX 125 and RM 250 don't.

Crank seals involve taking the whole motor apart.

  • Probably a seal, not fun to replace, but it is cheap if you can do it yourself.

How much do you think it would cost to have a shop replace the crank seal? Can you reach the crank seal pretty easily while in the process of doing a top end rebuild?
  • I'm not too sure how much a shop would charge you i do all my own mechanic work, but the seal is only $8 the labor is whats gonna get you. And you cant access the seal at all in a top end rebuild as the seal is in the bottom end.
