My boy a new rider & no place to ride????????????
  • New to DR, my son will be getting a low budget pitbike for Christmas, just for starters. Only one problem we live in the Bronx, New York. I have been all over the internet and ear to the grapevine, it seems the only place to ride for a minor is illegally in fields or empty lots around projects running from the cops. Just wondering if anyone else has the same difficulties & maybe some suggestions? Its no wonder our kids get caught up in so much, locally its made really difficult.

Yep if there is literally no woods around you it looks like your gona have to drive to wherever to ride. As far as I know it basically illegal to ride anywhere except your own property or a riding park or track. Technically I break the law every time I go out but if you go to places that are rode heavily chances are no one cares.
  • Well, you can look here to see if there are places near you. I took a look and there are a few trail areas, but some you need to be a member of aa club, which is not always a bad thing, and some are only seasonal. Either way, it is worth checking out. I hope it helps.

  • Super thanks the comments, your suggestions are greatly appreciated. I'll definitely look into it.
    peace out!!!!!!
  • Don't get me wrong - I'm glad to have another person join the ranks,  but . . .I don't understand why you bought him the bike in the first place though . . . where did you think he was going to ride it?

Unless you go to a motocross track (he'll get killed on a low budget pitbike, so don't even consider it), or have your own property or know someone who does, you're out of luck.   Tug Hill (a good 4 hours from you) is the only legal place to ride trails in NY and I don't think your son would be allowed unless he's a certain age, and pretty sure kids need to take a safety course. They do for riding snowmobiles and ATV's, so I'm guessing it's the same for dirtbikes and I don't think NYS considers pitbikes to be dirtbikes.  All machines need to be registered and have a visible plate as well.

There is a club out on LI that has trails (Long Island Recreational Trails Conservancy) that would be closer to you than Tug Hill, but that's about it and I believe there is a fee.  (I live in upstate NY btw).

  • Hey no worries, and very valid points, in my day it was nothing to work on our bikes (street or dirt) all night and go do our thing in these same streets and fields. He's gotta learn sometime, I just wanted to better by him and maybe see if it was a fever he would have as well.
Please don't get me wrong he will ride dirty in the Bronx, it's just disappointing there is nothing organized in my urban jungle. ya know....
But thanks for taking the time & the info.
I also heard of Monticello, NY about an hr & a 1/2 from me, a little more research is all its gonna take......

4 hrs drive to go and ride legally?  Bugger that, that would kill me...

I like that you wanted the young fella on a bike too, it will be good for him, but it's gonna be tough to get him out on it.

I recommend joining a club to if you're in to it, it can be a great environment for kids.

  • Okay - I'm not sure what "riding down and dirty in the Bronx" meant but it doesn't sound like it's helping elevate the sport much, so I'm outta this thread

Since it's Xmas - search for Sullivan County ATV Association.  Their  zip 12701
