  • Replace them now ML. There is not a concensus on when they bust, but they do. They never crack from what I have been told, they just bust to hell and back. I replaced mine for about $150 ($75 each) and I have no worries now. Replace them now is my advice having dealt with busted free pistons.

i dont think its an hours thing I believe its just when you finally get a hit on the front thats too hard.

theres a mod you can do that involves drilling holes in the side of plastic piston that allows oil to drain out that fills in the top. I believe they crack from hydraulic locking when the piston compresses right up against the base valve cap under rapid compression.

I had a meeting with my OCD and we agreed 2 swap them out at next oil change (100 hrs). Ima buy the replacements http://www.ebay.com/itm/KYB-Metal-Free-Piston-Assemblies-/330387815324  and get new bushings and all and do it all at once.

Or I may ( not sure yet) have Factory Connection do a revalve and swap the pistons while they have the forks.

no offense to the SSF fork but on youtube, I have been watching all the reviews so far on the 2013 450 shoot out, the dirt rider crew doesnt seem to like the SSF this year and surprisingly liked the yamaha's suspension setup, which doesnt have the SSF feature. So idk???

Picked up a set of Moose Radiator Braces.

    image

to put them on it requires draining the coolant so I had to pull off the air box. (Dag plz remind me 2 take out the paper towel :) )

    image

    image

sum of the bolts will be hard 2 get at, so I used lots of Blue thread locker

    image

They seem 2 fit nice and look sturdy enough, but the left side needs to have nylon spacers to pad it out away from the coil.  And then u need to modify the shrouds so they will bolt back on.

    image
    image

While I was under the tank I gave the valves another check. (Look NICKEEEYYY!!!!!! :)   )

    image

Its hard 2 c from this pic how far out the left Radiator is, but if it keeps them straight "when" not if I go down on the ice, it will be well worth it.

    image

    image

All I need now is sum Ice.  :(

ruck that, I'd be at the shop they make it hard to work on your bike these days, 1 oil in the left side different oil in the right side. in your manual says some shlt like 0.62 qts whats that, thats crazzy!! it seems like you're working on them as much time is a ride them,im definitely buying a 2 stroke, I don't care what nobody says, the maintenance is nowhere close.it takes to much time to do this yourself n the shops try to rape you,I havent looked at manual for suspension, did you put hour meter on u bike or a calculated guess ???

@ML - your bike is an SE as well its the White model YZ's. it just stands for Special edition. Because as everyone knows the YZ's are always blue and white, if you look at the MSRP black, white and sometimes red model YZ's are $100 to $200 more then the Blue models. The dealership by me calls the special editions so????

WHOO HOO! I gotta SE!  LOL

SEAN, ride time and wrench time, should b pretty close, if u want sumthn dependable. When I change the oil in my bike it gets 1 quart. ( not .92 or .97 ) jus 1 quart its pretty easy and it takes aboot 15 minutes 2 check ur valves.  aboot the same amount of time it use 2 take me 2 check my reeds on my 2t.  I have an hour meter and koby is a poser.
