welcome to the forum Gar, and to dirt bikes!   I love little 2-strokes.  For starters, always buy motorcycle-specific oils, both in the engine and the fuel.  Don't go cheap in this department!   I use Bel-ray Gear-Saver for my transmission (also lubricates the clutch).   Make sure you clean and oil your air filter every couple rides.   There are some great products out there (No-Toil is one) to make it easy.  Don't substitute gasoline to clean your air filter!   I bought and always have on hand a spare air filter for a quick change on extremely dusty days.   The best performance "upgrade" is learning how to properly tune your engine and set up your suspension.   Buy the manual for your bike, if you don't already have it, and learn everything there is to know about your bike.    Have a good maintenance schedule and stick to it.   There are a lot of opinions out there about how often to change your oil and rebuild your top end, but in reality it depends on how hard you ride it.

One common problem to look for is a too-rich carburetor setting causing excess splooge (un-burned oil dripping from your exhaust) that can clog up the works.

Another common problem is letting your chain/sprockets get too worn out.  If the sprocket teeth are curved forward it is time to replace it, and I always buy a new chain whenever I buy a new sprocket.

There are not too many problems that come up when your bike is well maintained and cared for.

Having recently removed neglected frozen rusty needle bearings Id recommend greasing swingarm and linkage bearings, or replacing. Id remove the rear axle and coat it with anti seize. If you can wiggle the rear wheel replace the wheel bearings. Grease the steering stem bearings.
  • Hey Garcia - welcome aboard!

Good info from Paul & CR.   I have a little '06 KX100 and it's never given me a bit of trouble.  Like Paul said - keep the air filter clean.  It can be a bit of a pain because it's such a small area to work in, but it's important.   Shop around to see if you can find air filters on sale - it makes life much easier if you have extras.

Post up a couple of pics!

  • You need to run 32:1 Premium : Maxima Super M. Oh and you might need to change the plugs to hotter ones, if it has the 105 plug still in. PS. that bike is awesome and I have loads of fun on it.
