2006 crf450 sounds weird

I just finished shimming my valves and have run the bike for about 2-3 minutes a day for the past 3 days, trying to adjust the idle. Every time I start it, it is hard to start. It usually takes 10 kicks to get it running. It doesn't even idle with the choke on. I also get very loud backfires when trying to kick it over. When I finally get it started, it sounds normal towards the lower rpms, but when I open it up, it is very crisp. It sounds like it is crackling. It also was puffing white clouds when I rolled the throttle open. I'm both assuming and hoping it is because it was about 28 degrees last night, but I don't want to take chances. I still have the seat off, but it seems like it's shaking a lot. It just doesn't sound the same. It really hurts my ears too. Also, when I try adjusting the idle screw (the one that wraps around the front of the carburetor) I can pull it out almost 4 turns and bring it in closed without any change in the speed of the engine. I am running 87 because I am used to running 87 in my truck and wasn't paying attention, but I have no idea what else it could be.

How far out were the valves?

Adjust the air screw. Loosen the carb and turn it out so you can reach the screw, start the bike and turn the screw until you hear the RPM's reach max speed.
