Haven't been around in a long time, time for new tires
  • Hey guys been gone from the forum for a while but was not gone from dirtbiking. Did a lot of riding this summer. I also bought a new pickup truck which is what I have been spending my money on recently. I am still riding the crf230, its time for new tires front and back.  My conditions are all over the place. I ride rocks, mud, dirt-sand mix, and little pavement. I am looking for a tire that is good in all these conditions.

    Is this dunlop any good?

    Open to all brands, thanks.

welcome back!   The Dunlop 956 is probably the best all-around tire out there, IMO.   The only problem I had with them was how fast they wore out, but I ride in a lot of rocks at very aggressive speeds.  I tore up one 956 rear tire in just one weekend.  So for a long-lasting tire I use the Maxxis IT Desert tire on the rear and use the 956 Dunlop on the front.

  • Just checked that tire does not come in the size I need to bad. My rear tire size is 100/100-18. So I am still on the search for a rear tire.

  • Edit: This looks to be the same tire as you said paul, just doesn't say IT.

I always like MX51's front and rear, but I only ride track, but they have excellent traction and hold up great! But by far the best traction of any tire in my oppinion is the DUNLOP 756. Best traction ever from a tire but wear after only a few rides. Btw welcome back man good to have ya back.

  • Hey Honda, whats happening! Hows the 230? On all 3 230's here we have Geomax MX51's front and rear..and LOVE them. They have been a great tire, wearing evenly, and sounds like we ride a lot of the similar terrain. I would recommend it for sure.

  • Welcome back. I use an MX51 by Dunlop on the YZ125 my son rides and have had great luck so far. We have had that tire on teh bike for a good 50-65 hours now and ride the same terrain and it is now needing replaced with about 45% tread left. Front tire is still well over 80%, but my son does not ride as hard as I do, and a good portion of that time was on sand in Florida.

I use either a Kenda Millville for my 300 or the Pirelli XCMH seems to be a good tire as well. I ride the same terrain as you for the most part and after one ride the XCMH looked brand new and I tortured the damn thing. Mud, hardpack, gravel, dirt, rocks, roots...I went through it all and it came out like a champ.

All the tires I mentioned are fair priced via RockyMountain as well, so see what they offer for you and go from there. I have heard great things about Maxxis as well, but I have never tried them. I plan to try them though due to what I have heard about them.

  • Welcome back Hondarider!

Another vote for the MX 51s.  I don't have them on the little KX, but I only ride that on my property (all dirt).  The KTM's on the other hand were ridden on bedrock, dirt, loose gravel and hardpacked sand.  I think the 51's actually come stock on all the new KTM's.

  • Ok guys thanks for the good info. I will consider the mx51's.

  • Brad the 230 is running stronger then ever. I put it through hell this summer and it keeps coming back for more.

Good to see your doing aright 22.

I also use the MX51's but I ride track. I will keep using them because the traction is the best yet. I think they wear a little fast though. Probably due to there softer rubber.

  • Yes do let us know, those tires look gnarly.

And glad to hear the 230 is strong! Mine always gets me out of tough situations..going to be hard to upgrade, but I have too!
