Building a CR125
  • Half way thinking about building a CR125. Aluminum frame, one of the more powerful engines.

Now what do you guys think, what year had the most powerful engine. And what year had the lightest/strongest/best handling frame?

Just one of those ideas, most likely wont happen but id kinda like to shop around and see what I could do.

And if the engines are a little older and have different mounts than the frame thats ok, I have a buddy thats darn good at welding aluminum. (He builds airplanes)

And if its possible I'm not completely opposed to mix and matching top and bottom ends. I know some of the newer ones people thought had too much room in the crank case or something like that but the top will probably get an overbore kit anyway and I would also probably stroke it.
  • Definitely not the 02/03 engine. Mine was a tad sluggish

Better than having a 12 with 3 hrs
  • Maple Leaf MX, Thanks for the heads up but I want to stay away from the 04's I heard the power valve thing sucked and trying to find parts for an engine they only used in 1 year is a pain.
  • Yeah agreed. But chud drives his villipoto fast

never had a problem finding parts. dont believe everything you read on the interweb.  skill makes you fast, not the bike or parts. just ask maple.
  • Your input is appreciated crwoods

Yep, good Moderator material, right there.

Currently own a 2003 CR125 and yeah it dose not have the greatest bottom, and Mid but decent top. I've read up and what I hear is that the years 2001-2004 are the least favorite of the CR years for their lack of power. However keeping in mind that UNLESS your an "A" level rider your NOT likely to notice a big difference. If your like me a "B" rider at best you don't ride it hard enough to notice any real loss compared to say the YZ in similar year models.
