My newest truck, a commuter that I just bought a couple weeks ago.   The only pictures that I have of it are from the other day when I smashed into a tree on my way to work:

  • That sucks, and only a couple weeks old...One of the kids in my town wasted $45,000 of his own money on a new gmc and it was in a ditch on the side of the road the first day it snowed this winter only about one week old. He was mad as hell when the old beater 97 was pulling him out haha.

  • I've noticed there's a lot of toyota's driving around. Is something really good about them? The only toyota's i've driven felt cheap and a couple friends have tried staying loyal to toyota and it hasnt treated them well...Do the new ones blow the old early 2000's and pre 2000's out of the water or something?

I have a 1990 toyota tacoma SR5 (automatic) with 168,xxx on it still running strong! My buddies dad bought a 1997 tacoma SR5 brand new off the showroom in 98' has 345,xxx on it on orginal clutch, pistons, and valve train. His is a inline 4 like mine as well. You cant go wrong with 22RE motors by toyota, always parts available and last for ever!

  • Thanks Mike! You ask and you shall recieve..! the story: I was an idiot one night and listened to my buddy, and decided to try and go through what's pictured. WELL, its a lot softer then I thought. Call up my old man, he comes down, barely has to touch the throttle to pull me out. So, he turns around and decided to dive in to show me how its done.. he gets stuck(this was before we had mudder tires and a winch). So he locks the rear end..still is stuck. Turns out the drain wall thingy went farther over then he thought, so he bassically hit a wall and couldn't climb it. so I pulled him out after he pulled me out..crappy pics as my buddy was taking them..but you get the idea.

Crushed my one exhaust pipe in the process..oh well.
    image

Had he done this now, after we have been taught how to wheel and what gear/speed and what not to go into, he would have gotten out just fine. but we were still n00bs at that point. Now we lead when we get in the bush! :D

i will get our 2000 ford ranger passed on to me after my sister gets done abusing it. it is black and in good shape but my sister hates it and would like to mess it up.
my question to all of you is why toyota? imo they suck. what happened to the gas pedals sticking? they are foreign cars built in the usa, and american cars are built somewhere else. that is messed up. it must be a northerners thing.

  • My truck has the 4.6l v8 and I love it. Tows 5000lbs like nothing. Brad I was going for a diesel f250 but I could not get the right type of plates and the extra cost was to much. I love my truck mileage is at about 12-15 city and like 17-20 highway.

hey jake, the ranger is a good truck i think you'll like it.   Why Toyota you ask?   I gave my '98 Tacoma to one of my daughters and she has been driving it for the past 10 years.  It has 265,000 miles on it and I haven't had to do any repairs, EVER.  Still on the original clutch too (5 speed manual).  Before the Toyota I had a Dodge Dakota that lasted exactly 90,003 miles (the dealer wouldn't help me out since the factory warranty ran out at 90,000 miles, true story).   I had a Ford Ranger before that and it was a decent truck but didn't have enough power for towing or passing others.  Before the Ranger I had another Dodge that was a great truck!  We still run it on the ranch, but with full-time 4 wheel drive I got about 4 miles per gallon.  Before the Dodge I owned a '67 Ford 1 ton with a straight 6- now THAT was a great truck!  It had a flatbed deck and I'd put easily 2 tons on it several times a week (I was a stone mason back then) without a hiccup.  Before the Ford I owned several Chevy '65 trucks that I would buy for a few hundred bucks each and piece them all together to get one decent truck out of the bunch.  I'm still partial to Chevy trucks and think they're nice rides.   In fact I'm still partial to Ford as well.  When it came down to this most recent truck purchase it was the high mileage and dependability of the Toyota that swayed me.  Price and terms also played a big role.

  • The gas pedal sticking? Is that the only thing you can come up with? Lol, every maker has defects, some bigger then others. I quite like Toyota, and I know people who have owned them won't go back to any other vehicle afterwards. My buddy(looking at the Tundra) put his 01 Tacoma in a ditch. The main B pillar passanger side was crushed in, glass blown out, smoke showing. The tow truck came, pulled it out..started it up and drove it onto the flat bed. The switchable 4x4 still worked.. He swears by Yota. I'm only really Partial to Ford. I like their trucks, and actually have no complaints about their vehicles. In my family we buy whatever, we have had Ford, Chevy, GMC, Dodge and Buick. None of which have given us any TRUE problems. The Safarri Van we had gave us some more then others..but nothing to cry over. :P

  • I would honestly never buy a toyota. Im not one of those "made in america or nothing" kinda guys, but ford has driven me through a shitstorm and made it out running great, powerstroke especially. I wouldn't mind a cummins or a duramax. Im waiting until i get on a job (iron workers-union) and then i can save up some money and buy an lbz duramax, or maybe build myself a 1997 dumping flatbed body 97' 4 door Fummins, talk about one of a kind.

actully fords are made in america, or at least assembled here. in kentucky. i have always thought of a toyota as a "city boys truck" people that wont a truck because it looks cool. looks are nice, but preformance is better. all i have heard is bad about toyota.

Toyota makes a solid truck, most are assembled in the states now as well. I dont think the accelerator issues applied to the trucks at all.

Lets not turn this thread into a "Best Brand" thread.

6 months ago I retired the 1987 Mazda B2200 I had been driving daily for 15 years with 248,000 miles on it.

I'll try to find some pics. My 16yr old son drives it now.

7.3's where it's at for diesel, they are tough to find with low miles, but if you can, it's usually always a good pickup.

My buddy has an 02, it's such a beast. I was looking for a while for one, but I thought about how much I drive to California, figured I would go nuts if I had to commute that much in a diesel. Guess when I get a travel Trailer again I'll pick one up.
