05crf450r won't start. Help plZ
  • Hey guys I have a 05 crf450r with approx 50-80 hrs on it(not sure recently purchased second hand) and had a full day ride last trip I went on. No problems until last stop for day and it was a little hard to start but did start. I have since serviced the bike, put new plug in, oils, air cleaner, but it refused to start. So I delved a little deeper checking valves. All but one were spot on with the .16 clearance, the one had none, so I have re shimmed the valve, checked ignition time and wiring, replaced timing chain adjuster(as was broken) and redone timing, and have put it all back together with still no fire in the beast. I am confused as to why it will not go. Any help or suguestions as to what may be wrong or what to check would be awesome. Have I missed something simple I should be looking at?
    Thanks

have you cleaned the jets in the carb? thats where i would look.

keep an eye on that valve clearance. if it went out of spec once chances are it will do it again very quickly

I'm thinking only thing that's different is the shim job you did. Last valve job I did the timing marks lined up at tdc (but I had it in the wrong revolution) I.e. it was 360 degrees off. Id double triple check the Cam timing. Replacing the Cam chain tensioner may have affected something. Check those clearances again. Is there anyway do a compression check on that bike?
  • Ok I'll chech carb out on Monday and recheck the timing and cam to make sure that it's on the right revolution and the valve clearance again. The carb is prob the only the I haven't really had a good look at
Thanks guys I'll keep u posted as to how I fair and if I find anything :)

Are you saying the timing chain adjuster was broken? What part of the adjuster was broken?

  • The recess that the circlip sort of thing was all cracked and smashed had to strip the side casing to make sure nothing had fallen into engine

Would definitely re check to see if everything is lined up correctly as marky stated.

Even if you get it running the valve clearance will not last long, and its time for a valve/ top end job.
