how to tell between bad valve seals and bad rings without pulling the head.

    I bought a 2002 klx 110 a couple of days ago because it was a steal for $200 if the rear rim is legit its worth $200 itself.
    anyways it burns oil, not a smokescreen but enough to hurt the cylinder if I leave it. I dont know if it's rings or a bad valve seal. Is there any way to tell without pulling the head? If not no problem, but I really don't want to have 3 open engines on my bench, Two is good enough for now.

    Leak down test will tell you a good deal, but usually I just pul the engine in this case as there may be more than one issue. It may be a bad gasket as well, or a bad valve spring. There may be several issues causing the smoke you see. I still maintain that you need to pull the engine. No matter what happens, if this is your only issue and you nabbed the bike for two bills, you are doing well.

    I didnt really need another 110, but the deal is why i picked it up. Rings it was, so it gave me a good reason to change out the clutch basket,flywheel, and crank all for an 08 i had laying around and put a 143 in it. Leak down was a good idea, thanks.

    I didnt take any pics of the internals, but you can use a newer (04+) crank, you need to replace the clutch basket, flywheel, and order two spacers, but other than that it pops right in and works fine. the 02's have notoriously weak cranks that break after any mods farther than a cam or valves.
