Buying used 4stroke what to look for?
  • I was looking at a 02yzf250 and it does not run. The owner said it has no compression and the top end needs to be re built
I am new to repairing bikes especially 4 strokes. I use to ride 2 strokes as a kid but wanted something to maybe work on with my boy and have a decent bike after the rebuild. Can anyone tell me what to look for if I look at this 02 250 so that I don't end up picking up a giant paperweight? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would say if it has zero compression then its most likely a valve issue. As far as what to look for.... short of ripping it apart, I'd say make sure engine spins smoothly. But you have to be prepared for the worst if you do buy this and it needs new everything and machineing ect you may end up spending over 1500$ on a bike that barely worth that much. If you get it for less than 500$ you can always get it find out the issues if it too much you can part it out.
  • Thanks so much for the info. What would be the best way to make sure the engine spins smoothly?

    Pressing kick start lever down
  • Slowly cranking the bike over and put ur head right down by the cylinder and listen for any weird engine noises or transmission noises.

I would never pay more than $200 for a 2002 YZF bike that is not running. Non running bikes are usually cans of worms, besides the motor issues, the suspension seals, wheel and linkage bearings etc. are likely shot too. Even if you do your own wrenching you could spend easily over $1500 fixing it. Just find a good used one with low hours and get it, even if you have to travel.

In all seriousness, who would sell a bike blown up or not for 200$? You could get that much just selling the wheels an tires....

"In all seriousness", people who just want to clean up their garages, and don't have time messing with selling crap or can't fix the bikes. If you don't do your wrenching $40-50/hour shop rate can add up quick.

It would be a "GREAT" learning experience imo. If you get it for real cheap.

Regardless, an 02 yz250 is a PAIN to start, even when it's fairly tuned and in okay running shape. I wouldnt get a yz 4 stroke in that year ever again.

That what year mine is.... starts 2-3 kicks cold. Just piston needs to be in proper position before you kick it.

If you put an Hot Cam exhaust cam in it you eliminate the decompression lever and it makes a big difference.

  • Well I can get the bike for $375. Owner said it needs a cylinder head so I assume everything in it as well.
  • I'm sorry the bike is a 2003 not 2002 if that makes a difference.

Its going to have to be your own judgement call.

I would just try and find a 250 2t that needs a rebuild if you're looking for a project for you and your son. 2t rebuilds = CHEAPER
