Ooooh. I hate to break it to you but I think you've bought a lemon. It sounds like a cheap chinese imitation and I would highly doubt that it will stand up to the rigours of racing. Well, not for long anyway.
Moving forward I suspect your best bet would be to keep an eye on craigslist or the like for a second hand 85.

Actually, Pop has a good point too. Go to the track, I have found most people involved in racing are very helpful and will go out of their way to help you.
Also, if your son hasn't ridden before, I'd just take hime out playriding on his own to get him started. On that basis, the trailwing might not be as much of a problem as it could be. It's a cheap way to get him riding. If he starts and doesn't like it, you're not in the hole for thousands of $$$. That can happen too...
