Hey guys i am gonna make it to cal city this year even if it kills me and i wanna take my family!!! Ok so I have my Yz450F (me or dad) yz250f (dad or I) Crf80F (my mom can putt around on in the pits) I am in need of advice of certain things to buy, i need:

    Tent/tents
    sleeping bags
    coleman stove
    shower bag (portable shower)
    how many inter tubes?
food (stuff that keeps you full for going all day)
    etc....

this is the stuff i am looking at buying so far. I know there is more to get but i amgonna start buying this stuff here and there till i get everything i need by march. What brands are best? which brands are best to stay away from? Would it be smarter to buy one bigger tent or multiple smaller ones? these are just some of the questions i have to get prepped. If anyone has any other info on what i am gonna need let me know.

    So far I have:
    The bikes (of course)
    plenty of tools
    jerry jugs (gas cans)
    extra tires
    extra rear rims
    extra fluids
    pots/pans
    plenty of googles
    mx gear extra sets
    3 helmets
    etc...

If you run heavy duty tubes and about 13 psi, you shouldn't have flat tyre issues.

I live on meusli bars and cordial when we do all day rides...

  • Better to start planning early - but I agree with Kiwi that cereal/energy bars are a good item to stock up on.  You can't go wrong with the Coleman brand, but Court and Paul would be the ones to let you know what you actually need to bring before you start spending your money on things you won't use.

Thanks kiwi and hair i appreciate the advise. I am starting early so this isnt a big shocker on $$$ when it gets closer to the trip if that makes sense. If i can spend $50 here $100 there till I have everything i need, it will work out alot better instead of waiting till march comes around and buying it all at once. I am trying to ease into it hahah :)

Good thinking, I do the same thing here.   I stash tyres and consumables away during winter when I'm feeling rich so that come riding season (and I'm broke...) I'm all set.

Let's get rolling then!   Start by making a menu that includes what you will be having for each meal while you are out there.  I try to keep it simple, like hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, steaks, etc. for suppertime on a grill.  Of course coffee for mornings.   Keep your breakfasts easy too, like fried eggs or omeletts.  Pancakes take a lot of work and clean up after wards, so I avoid those.  I make up lunch sandwiches at home ahead of time, like chicken salad or salami.  Canned fruit goes a long way at any meal or for just a snack.  Same goes for fresh fruit.  I bring drinking water and stay away from sugary sodas in the desert.  The more food that you can prepare at home the better off it will be and no one will have to work too hard while camping out.  Once you have a menu, you pack your supplies around that.   A bbq grill and/or camp stove with extra propane bottles for the stove.  Don't forget seasoning!

For the campsite, for myself I bring a 2-person tent and air mattress and sleeping bag for sleeping.  I have a Pacific Trail tent that has lasted me for over 10 years, it's a very good brand.  Make sure your tent has a rain cover!  Stay with an average sleeping bag, because the expensive ones will be too warm for Cal City, of course this is coming from a guy who lives in Montana.  A small pup tent would be too small for changing clothes or getting meals ready (if it's raining).   Bring weather-related stuff like tarps and plastic bags to keep things dry if it does rain.  Bring firewood if you can.  Don't forget to bring a good sturdy table for cooking and other food prep.   I bring a lot of water, figure about 5 gallons per day of camping/cleaning for 2 people.   Setting up a shower is a nuisance so I forego showers for the few days I'm in the desert, and make up for it at home or at a motel on the way home.   A washcloth with soap and water is enough for just those few days IMO.   Don't forget camp chairs to relax and sit around the camp fire.   That's about it, really.   I go pretty primitive because I don't want to spend a lot of time at camp but out riding my dirt bike.  It's not fair to come up with a fancy food menu and then stick someone with all the cooking/cleaning chores.

For the bike, I bring a spare air filter and the stuff to clean the one in the bike as well.  I run heavy duty tubes like Kiwi mentioned, and keep my rear tire inflated to 14 pounds.   Of course I have spare tubes at camp.   A 21" front inner tube will fit in either the front or rear tire so that is what I carry IF I carry a spare tube while riding.  I bring about 7.5 gallons of fuel per bike when I go to Cal City, and use about 2.5 gallons per day when out riding, besides having cash on hand for emergency refuels on the trail.   You don't have to worry about premix oil if you ride 4 strokes only.   I usually plan a gas stop in Johanesburg on each day of riding when I'm out there.   I carry energy bars on every ride, and of course a backpack with water for drinking.  Cal City can be hot (mid 80's) or cold (mid 30's) in March, so I pack gear for both conditions.

Remember that you and your family are not alone!  The RUTS club is filled with great people who make instant friends!  If you need something someone will help you!  If you forget something someone will provide.   If the weather gets nasty I always get invitations from several folks to stay in their camper/motorhome overnight.  I always get invitations to join others for a meal, and take them up on it.  I don't plan on it, but it happens every year.   Last year I ended up giving all my food to those who graciously hosted me in their campers.  If you guys do come out, I'll set up camp next to you and help out with what I have.

We had the enclosed trailer and that helped out a bunch when it came time to fix flats or get out of the rain.  The EZ-UP shade thing came in real handy to keep our food supplies in the shade on a hot day.

Of course you want to bring tools and a tire pump for maintenance and repairs.  We had to clean our air filters each day because of the dust and fixed two flats in one day.

  • Good idea, Hair! I have applied for a few government grants through my school I am elgiable for..totalling roughly 2500$. I will for sure take some money from that and put it away for this trip. And if I don't go this time, theres always next time. We all need to have one bigggg ride..before everyone can't make it anymore!

I think this is the year the Kiwis make the trip, if the kiwis come i think everyone will make a strong effort to be there.  round trip $1,261.  We might be able to find a better deal than that.  We could raise enough for a couple of tickets, You never know unless you try, failure is nothing to be afraid of.

Won't be 2013 for me sorry.  Too much work on and young kids and stuff.

I'd entertain the idea of 2014 though.  I wanna sort out ML for once and for all...   LOL

If I was to get my shit together and do the trip it would end up being a family holiday as well.  Do the whole shooting box, disney land, all that sort of stuff.     Probably cost about 15k when all is said and done.

The sister in law is a travel agent though, I might have to start her looking for me...

  • I recently started eating a pretty restrictive diet so this trip, if I can make it happen, is going to really be a BIG test for me, Ive only camped once before on it and since then have had to get myself a bigger cooler haha.  I cant eat the convenience foods I grew up on (like hotdogs and doritos) so its going to be a lot of prep work for me.  I have a baby bbq, tent, air mattress, sleeping bags and a cooler.  Maybe I premake some kabobs or something?  Egg-beaters are always a HUGE help!

Can anyone tell me if theres a store nearby for ice in case mine all melts?  My food is primarily perishables and I have to keep it cold!  If I can make it out it would be on Friday afternoon/early evening.  I wont know until the week before tho if this is going to happen for me due to work..but I am sure going to try!!

Does anyone have a map of the area?

Bite off more than you can chew and then chew it!

there is a store near camp for ice, but a cooler full of ice should last you a couple days no problem.   Since you will be showing up Friday (if you make it), plan on riding the poker run.  There will be two loops; one for easy trails (about 32 miles) and the other with more difficult terrain (64 miles with a gas stop).   I posted a map to the campsite on the Cal City thread, but here is another copy of it.....

If you are coming from the Inland Empire (through Riverside) take Hwy 395 north from the 15 freeway.   If you are coming from the L.A. area and west, take the 14 freeway north to Mojave, then take the 58 east toward Barstow and turn left (north) onto Hwy 395.  This little map will take you to camp from Kramer Jct.  (Hwy 395 and Hwy 58).
