Switching from 4 stroke to 2 stroke
  • Ive got a Honda cr250R I recently bought 3 weeks ago and I ride trails on it. I'm 6"2 and weight 175 pounds but feel the bike too jumpy on the trails. All my friends ride 4strokes so I usually shoot off in front of them and the bike is a bit too complicated for the trails. Being a 2smoker it's barely got an idle so I always waste a lot of energy revving and keepin It going. Being used to only 4 strokes I've felt it quite hard to ride enjoyably with it considering I do mostly endurance trails rather than track. I like the light and balanced feel of the 250 but the power band is annoying when it comes to endurance because I really have to work my upper body. I would like go for another 4stroke because their more enjoyable for riding and aren't as jumpy. Although very fun for poppin wheelies and accelerating quick, their not as enjoyable for long riding nor keeping constant speed with a caravan or group. I'm looking at a trade with a Honda crf450r. What do you guys say? I'm concerned about the weight.

  • If it suits ur riding style better i would do it. Look up both specs but youll probably only lose about 20-30lbs. My yz weighs around 210 and they claim my kxf weighs in at 228. But on the track i quickly adjusted and the suspensions a world better.

Ya I'd go for it. I think the weight difference no that big a deal. You could prolly address the idle problem pretty easily. If you make the trade just bring a suction cup along on trail rides for when ur balls creep up inside of ya.lol
  • Im pretty tired of the powerband and horrible idle of the cr. The only problem though is that the owner of the crf is not the orar owner and doesnt Know if its Been raced or anything about its servicing? Do you think its worth taking the leap? http://atlanta.craigslist.org/sat/mcy/3404465176.html

I wouldn't touch that with a 40' barge pole.   I'd have your 2 smoke any day.  The 450 is 9 years old now, the only difference between that, and a handgrenade, is the pin...   Take note of the fact the owner wants to swap for a 2 stroke, there's a hidden message there somewhere...   LOL

You could play with your 250 and set it up so it suits your needs better.   A flywheel weight would smooth out the power and I suspect you could sort out the idle with some tinkering.   Others on here are better qualified to give advice though.

  • Well it is a two stroke, they aren't really supposed to idle anyways but like kiwi said you can tune it so it does. 2 strokes also go surprisingly low without stalling out.

IMO i wouldn't do the trade on an old 4banger, they're just ticking time bombs. Yeah it has a fresh valve adjustment but that doesn't mean the valves are shot to shit and the crank isn't on its last revolutions before BANG it punctures the cases. If i was you, i'd clean up the 250 nice and well, then put it for sale. Get some cash and go from there

  • Man I'm just really not enjoying 2stroke on the trails and I just got the cr so I don't really want to have to sell it. I thought it would be good to trade it tho. The reason he wanted to trade it for a 2stroke is because he says he likes riding 2 stroke more and has more experience. Theirs a problem tho and that is that the owner doesn't know if its ever been raced nor does he have any info regarding its servicing. Any thoughts? I'm really leaning towards it tho. Those are nice bikes and I love 450s

IMO the cr250 is a much friendlier trail bike than that 450. in saying that though, if what you really want is a 4 stroke then theres no point asking us if its a good idea. do what you want not what we want.

As Kiwi said add a bit of weight to the fly wheel this will help smooth out the power band.
An FMF Gnarly pipe is a really good mod for tight riding Havent used a PC plat 2 but it is also a torque pipe
Long canister silencers (most forest approved fit this) will help smooth the roll on
Add one or two teeth to the rear sprocket this should help you ride a gear higher which will put you more on the torque curve instead of the HP curve.

  • Add a flywheel weight to the the 250, reagear it a little lower, and learn to control it via the thorttle and clutch and you will slay damn near any 4t around. Just my $0.02 here.

a yfz is a quad. dont underestimate the racing quads. they have alot of traction and will thrash a dirt bike off the start every time. although the yz should out accelerate it once they're both hooked up.

also a quad is very hard to beat on a 2 wheeler through smooth flat corners.
