Near perfect condition 1987 xr200, engine problem. Help?!
  • Hi guys,

Just joined the forum today. I have a mint condition 1987 xr200 that I am having a couple issues with. I was riding the bike around as usual today for about 30 minutes in the yard. I started off in the woods on a slow ride examining the trail for whitetail deer antler sheds from last season, this lasted aproximately 15 minutes. Then I headed through the yard and ended on the road for about 10 more minutes. After taking the bike to about full speedimage for 10 seconds I was headed home. Did one last lap around the house and the bike quit out, back tireimage locked and slid through the grass. After a couple kicks I decided to leave it where it sat for 4 hours to cool.

When I returned I kicked the bikeimage over and it started and immediately made a strange noise and shut off. When I went to kick the bike again the kick starterimage was locked up. I rolled the bike 5 feet, the kick starter freed up, kick started it again, same strange noise, and shut off. If i push the kick starter slow there is a nasty grinding abnormal sign.

This is the extent of my findings today. Anybody have any information for me? I realized the engineimage is pretty well seized or blown but am wondering if there is any hope because my kickstarter is not locked up like I am reading it should be.

I am also wondering if I was to get rid of it in the current condition what do you think I ask for? Also im in CT if anyone is interested in purchasing it let me know.

    Thank you, Brian

Id say for bike that old with a serious issue.....prolly wouldn't get more than 2-300$ out of it. Id say take you clutch apart and see if the plates are grinding or out of spec repair as needed. Take stator cover off make sure it in place an magnets haven't detached from the flywheel. Take head off inspect piston and or do compression test (if you can) . If you haven't found the problem by this point it most likely a crank bearing issue or transmission issue. Either way ur cracking the cases. But if you do rebuild it. You can always get lil more for it after the fact. Imho I don't see why people keep bikes this long. I would of sold that bike ten yrs ago an bought newer.
  • get a manual and tear it down.  it could be something simple went wrong or it could be junk but there is only one way to find out.
