New guy on the block

    Morning all,
    Name here is Pujo.
I am 40 yrs old and just interested in a project.
My son and I are working on a 03 Honda xr80r, and another Honda 50 knock off bike.
No really looking for a big, fast bike, just something my son and I can enjoy working on together.

This leads me to a question. (a few questions)
With the xr80r, where can I find the best prices on parts, OEM or better. The bike runs, and doesn't smoke, but it seems it needs one of everything else on the bike. Not wanting to make the bike faster than what it is, just look really good (BLING). If it turns out good, we will sell it and start another.

The other bike is a 50, some kind of Honda knock off and it needs parts as well.
How do I go about finding information on this thing to get parts?
The VIN for the knock off is LRYPCHLCX50003588 if someone can point me in the right direction.
    Thanks,
    Pujo
  • service honda is a great place for parts and you can ship them your 4t head to rebuild as well.  good luck

Well all I can say is be prepared to take a loss when you decide to sell it.

So far I have $75 in it. It does run good but the bike was abused. Thinking a few hounded bucks and may make a little. But it's not about the money, it's the project. It will be fun and if I can't get my cost out of it I can always keep it to ride around the house. I'm not going to put thousands of dollars in it. What would the bike be worth in like new condition?
    Thanks,
    Puko

My best guess in like new condition I would say somewhere in the area of 500$ but most likely less. You'd have to see what the ones that are 10-12 years newer are selling for an ask urself what you'd realisticly pay for it. In all seriousness in my area you could find a 80s yz250 for6-700$. Not in like new condition but that because even if the $ was sank into it to give it a face lift ect. It wouldn't add much value BC most people would rather buy newer even if it a lil rougher but pay the same if not lil more. Plus parts availablity is always an issue the older you go as well.

There are not many bike riders in my area and no tracks to ride on. We just wanna play. I kinda set a limit, maybe no more than $800 to try and get it the way I would like it. This is first bike since 1984 when I ended up in ICU for a week but i am now 40 and my son is 20 so I figured a nice project for us. I guess my overall goal would be to make it look as new as possible and not interested in all the performance mods. If we can make it look like it is new, I will be satisfied. But the entire bike needs new plastic and paint. The original plastic is intact but someone butchered it with black and blue paint. Don't think it will come off. I saw a new 125 or something like that runs about $2850 at the dealer so it's all good to me. Worst comes to worst, my wife can ride it and we will get bigger bikes. Who know what will happen. I have 2 free weeks a month to work on it so i guess it's all up I what I want to put into it.
I need paint, where can I get the correct paint to paint the frame? How do I prep it before paint? Sandblast?
    Thanks,
    Pujo
  • i thought your son must have been a little kid.  since y'all are both adults you need to find full sized bikes to fix up.  i do not recommend throwing money away on children's bikes.

I hear ya, but for a first project I figured we would start off small. If we succeed we can go farther. If we give up and scrap it, the loss would not be too big. Now we have bigger and even bigger 4x4's but something new in the mix. Money is not the issue and if I loose a little so what.

When my son was 18 he purchased a ktm 400 or something like that. I rode the bike and it scared the hell out of me. Well the bike didn't stay. We went and purchased new quads. All together we have jeeps 4-wheelers monster toyota's but I have just been to scared to get back on the 2 wheeler. I saw the lights and shook the hand of the man back in my day. So I understand you when
You say we should go to the adult size bikes. But........ I have to start off small to get my mojo back.
So, I'm on the hunt for parts, got any?
    While
I'm on the rig I'll be researching my needed parts and make a few orders. I have 2 weeks to dream, and 2 weeks to work on it.
My son and I both work on oil rigs in the Gulf.
