Buying used bike. Very experienced rider
  • Hi I'm 6"2 and I'm currently on a search to upgrade my bike. I've ridden Hondas and Suzuki and prefer japanese. I'm on a tight budget for an upgrade of 1500 to 1700 max, Usd. I'm interested in a 4 stroke because I'm more familiar with this style but I wouldn't mind a 2 stroke with a good amount of power yet not excessive for mostly trail riding. Any recommendations on bikes I should look at? I don't wanna be able to touch the ground easily with both feet and I want a lot of power. I weigh around 175lbs

back in the day the kdx175 was considered the ultimate tight trail bike. you might consider something similar.

the ZY 250 yamaha is a bundle of power that can easily be corralled for trail riding.  The KDX175 that coyotekiller mentions is a bit on the soft side for a tall rider.  I had a 2000 Honda CR250r (2-stroke) that I converted to a trail bike for my daughter and it had lots of power for when I wanted to have fun on it yet gave her very smooth power and fun on the trails.  I sold that bike last year for $1,900.00.

actually Felix YZ's usually have the highest seat hieght among the other manufactures (suzuki, kawi, Honda, etc..) in the full size bike range. I can tell you from personal experience YZ's are very reliable bikes both 2-stroke and 4-stroke. And if I am not mistaken the YZ250's 2 strokes by most riders agree they are  the best overal package from power to suspension in that class. But nowadays all bikes are typically good, with the proper care and maintenance they can last a very long time. Also any 250 2-stroke is gonna be fast enough for you, they carry some serious power.

  • That KX250 you posted a link to is pretty tight from the looks of it. Good price range as well.

As was stated, any 250 2t bike is going to work well if you set it up right and it has been properly maintained. If you are looking for a trail bike that has some kick, then a 250 2t is a good route, and if ti needs a bit of taming, add a flywheel weight and you should be golden.

As for a YZ over a KX, either really. From all accounts the YZ will have better power up top, but the KX has it down low. However, the YZ has a bit better suspension in that it is KYB and they do sit a bit taller on factory spec. However, if I could not find a YZ at a price I liked, but could on a KX...I would pull the trigger on a KX easily if the bike is in good shape.

  • hey, lets get a cool looking dirt bike and put all black plastic on it!!!!!
  • seriously just get a purple or other favorite color front fender and some new stickers and it will be cool.
  • The bike looks pretty solid actually. However, in the thrid picture it looks as if the pipe may have a good sized dent, or it could be the way the light is. *shrugs* That can be repaired though if it is not too bad. Post up some pictures when you get it at your house.

I wass a solid 6-1 in my prime I've now reached the age that I'm doing a bit of the height reversal
The seat height for taller riders is not really the issue
The seat to peg, seat to handle bar  handle bar to pegs is what either cramps or opens up the cockpit for a tall rider.

All the full size bikes will work,  If the riding position sitting or standing doesn't fit your preference there are several
inexpensive options to open up the riding position.

Taller seat foam, bar mounts and/or triple clamps (some newer bikes come stock with multi-position bar mounts)
    bar bend, foot pegs

As for as what has the best ergonomics for a tall rider each year the OEM's try to "fit" the average rider if your not in their range you will find yourself tweaking the ergos to fit your needs.
The CR 250  your picking up with a little adjustment to the flywheel weight and suspension will make a great trail bike.  The jetting is a bit touchy on those, nice options that seem to really help are the V-force reed valve, check and keep the tension on the RC valve
cables in speck and you'll have a great bike

  • Yeah you can really feel the reed valve kick in on the high revs especially on short spurts. The bike has been doing fine since I got it but I have noticed its developed a small leak of something that looks like oil from the muffler! I don't feel it affecting performance but I did see online that It could be something and o ring. Other than that the bike is a total rocket! I've never taken it past 3 because I don't really have any space!

  • Hey guys after riding a couple of days i noticed a but of oil in the muffler and a but of it would stock out the end. Is this normal? Or does it have to do with any o rige in the reed Valve? http://m1293.photobucket.com/albumview/albums/felixsaladbar/58CD0998-FD14-4973-AA9C-1F1CF1C926EE-1310-0000015F7DC0F7B3_zps9c8ab56b.jpg.html?o=4&newest=1
