02 RM 85 bogs in first PLEASE HELP!!!
  • Ok my sons Rm85 will bog when it hits the power band in first. Once you shift to 2nd it is fine. But in first it sounds juts like when you hit the rev limiter in a car. Its really got me scratching my head as it only does it in first. i cleaned the carb and check the reeds. Looks fine. what else can i check guys . need hel badly

I'm not sure why it would bog in first and not the other gears.

I have heard something similar to what you described if the Power Valve spring is not correctly adjusted.

1 st is very short on those,  2nd is a bit longer, 3rd and on up run much longer

Something a lot of newer riders do is hold 1st until it over revs then they short shift the other gears.
You might try hopping on it shift at the peak power of each gear. see if it does it.

  • Yeahi rode it myself to see what the deal is and it would not hit the power band at all in first would just bog badly. As soon as you shift into 2nd its fine. And today took the reeds out and noticed one was slightly bent up so I flipped it and screwed it back down and put it back in. I aslo cleaned the Carb really well and now its worse. Now it does it in all gears. So apparently I made something worse. I have new Carb and reeds coming this week as I am tired of taking those two things apart. How do I check the power valve?

There is an adjustment on the upper left hand side of the cylinder.  I don't recall the exact setting for that bike.  My sons 06 has a different PV set up I don't want to give bad info.  Your manual should have the info.

Before messing around to much get the reeds on and see if that doesn't do the trick.

Upper left, couldn't find a picture but look a the first link on the side of the power valve cover is a hole
on the second link you see a cover and what looks like a bolt this pre tensions the spring  part no 11.

I think I would go one piece at a time try the reeds first.

If you are talking the power valves, I just disassemble mine when I do a top end.  Use oven cleaner and scotch brite pad.
To check if they are working pull the pipe off you can push on the power valve it should move up and down freely.

The power valves get alot of the unburned premix oil on them, a gunky mess.  I wouldn't worry to much about cleaning them as long as they slide correctly.
