Trying to decide which 2013 250f
  • Hello guys, Havek83 here and I'm new to the forum which has been very helpful as this is the one I mostly look at.
I have a real issue trying to figure out which 2013 250f to get as there all getting better. First things first, this will be my
first dirt bike that I will get. I have a pretty good background in BMX so that's a plus I guess, and I have ridden a bike before. The first bike I rode was a 94 KX250 and boy was that a handful. Anyways, I'm really looking hard at the KX250F,
YZ250F even though it has a carb, and the CRF250R. I'm open to any suggestions as this will help a bunch. Sorry so long, just excited. :-)

I've been thinking of a250f myself. I'm going to pick up my yz250f this Friday. It not a 2013 but it will do.

  • The thing that's making me leaning towards the KX250F is the motor. I'm sure I wouldn't have to mess with the motor for a while and just play with the suspension.

You will always have to mess with the motor no matter which one you get. That's just part of maintenance. The KX is a very strong motor though.

Kawi is so far ahead of the pack this year that it is almost a no brainer.  But i don't think you could go wrong with any of them.  The YZF has the best suspension and the orange bike got a complete engine redo this year and has no kick start.

  • OK, so I think I may have narrowed it down to the KX250F and the YZ250F. I know the KX is pretty well rounded with a really good motor, and the YZ as daggit said has the best suspension as well as I think that same motor has self destructed once I think when Ernesto Fonseca was racing it in the outdoor nationals in 2003 if memory serves me correct. Not sure though.
  • By the way, I forgot to mention that I'm about 5' 8" and 150lbs. soak and wet. Like I have said before I have a good background in BMX so I know some of that will apply. I'll still have a lot to learn though.

How soon are you going to buy?  The 250 shootouts should be printed soon.  Check out what the mags are saying in their bike test on line.

  • I plan on getting one in the next two months hopefully.
  • Well that is a tough decision to make, but a pretty good problem to have, Havek.  Anyone lucky enough to get any 2013 250F is one lucky rider!  I tried a KX250Fand I liked it a lot.  It does not pull - it yanks - from bottom to top.  It is a serious race machine.  When I tried the 2013 CRF250R it was a little more mellow and beginner-friendly, but not much.  They are all very similar.  I would recommend a YZ 250, myself.  2T...

This Guy has no seat time on a dirtbike an your recommending a yz250 2t..... are you insane? I didn't ride much dirtbike yrs ago. Decided to try out my step brothers yz250. First time out of first wheelied it almost flipped it. Almost shit myself. Second time got off good went around the block wrecked it broke my hand and ripped my fingers open thru gloves mind you an some nice road rash to go along with it all.
  • Yes that is true.  But he is going to buy a dangerous modern race bike either way.  All of the 250F choices he was considering are serious race bikes with extremely high rev ceilings.  Accidentally grabbing too much throttle with any of them could lead to a very painful result.  It would be a mistake to think they are playbikes...
  • a 250f and a 250 2t are a difference without a doubt. Both will be easy to get out of hand with but it will be smoother taking it easy on the 250f.

The difference is predictable linear power or power that comes on light then bang its all there at once. Its a tough choice to buy something like an 85 just to get acclimated an buy something bigger shortly there after. But a 250 2 t a big load to handle. I agree 250 f has good power an not a play bike but its not gona surprise a rookie the way a 2 t will. A 4 t has power but you don't have to use it all, once your on the pipe of a 2 t you really have no choice.
  • Trust me, I know how a 250 2t feels and it was pretty fast. I was able to take it almost to forth gear before I had to slow down because I was running out of room fast. The thing is for me I know I couldn't ride a 250 2t that long, power is just to abrupt. I think I would feel a little more comfortable on a 250f because off the broader powerband.
  • Okay, I'm seriously leaning towards the YZ250F. The one thing that concerns me is should I worry about the carb? Yeah I know about accelerator pumps and all but, is the F.I. bikes that much better besides making adjustments easier?
  • Have you already spent years trying to perfect the fine art of jetting?  Jetting can be a bit of a learning curve if you have not done it before.  FI is instant gratification.  But the 2013 YZ250F is so well carburated that it really feels like it has FI.  Then again, I liked the 2013 KX250F so much that I went and got one myself.  One thing you do not have to be concerned about, Havek, is that no matter what you will end up with an awesome bike!  But then again, spending almost $10K you certainly should end up with an awesome bike!

No, I haven't done that yet. Although I have done a lot of research on the carb but I know there is a lot to learn. How does the KX feel? I bet that monster wants to pull you're arms off. :-)

I can tell ya, right now u may as well call me switch. Still having a rough time picking one, so I may go with this logical thinking... Green means go... Yellow means caution... Red means stop... Blue has been beaten the hell out of... :-)

I'm kidding, come on I was only joking. On the serious side, I'm really looking at the YZ. I have been a fan of Yamaha for a long time. I also like the contingency program they have. Are they the only ones to give a 30 day warranty?

When in doubt get a Honda, bullet proof reliability, easy to work on, great suspension, and good power.

Gearman must be a Honda sales Rep. Not the first time in his 7 posts I seen him say that.

No a sales rep, but we have raced CRF 250's, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09's, in men Intermediate and Women's pro . We ran them as practice and race bikes, and never ever ever, blew one up.  Suspension and handling were spot on.

Yeah, I've been looking at the CRF and the KXF. So far, it seems that the CRF is all around while the KXF is mostly motor with good suspension. I'm really leaning towards the KXF though.
  • I have a problem also I have a 2005 450 but I want a new 250f I go to the dunes about 4 times but I want to get serious with racing and like most people I only use about 50 percent of the 450 on the track what are you guys thoughts

Well, I know it's been a while but I finally made my decision. I'm going to get a 2013 KX250F in a couple of weeks. I think the thing that sold me is the motor. I can focus a little more on the suspension and worry about cranking the motor up later.

If I was getting any new 250f my first choice would be a KX, followed by a YZF, and a SXF. I really dislike the lack of kickstarts on the new sxf but im sure that could be easily added knowing ktm
