Hi, i recently bought an 03 yz 125 and i have a couple of questions about the tranny oil...if i undo the screw on the clutch cover which tells u if any oil is in it and nothing comes out can i just refill it or do i have to drain it than refill it (i just refilled it because i figured that if nothing came out of the hole than nothing was in there). Also how often would you recomend changing the tranny oil? I do not race and im not a very good rider yet so im not beating the shit out of the bike...i only trail ride, how many hours should i be able to get out of the tranny oil?

How bout this, get a manual for the bike. Step two buy recommended oil or equivalent an correct amount as stated in manual. Drain oil completely (don't drink it) install drain plug. Fill oil using the correct amount as stated in manual.

Then just change it once a year if your not racing. If your racing change it every time you change piston an rings.

Change it every 6 months, you can go a year if its a more toned down engine, but your 125 should have fresh oil every 6 months.

I ride tracks and trails and change my oil about every 48 hours. And it should have a number on the clutch cover as to how much oil you'll need.

Here is an article I would recommend...http://www.floridatrailriders.org/articles/techinf3.htm

Your oil will become contaminated before it breaks down remember it is lubing the clutch as well as the transmission which, no matter how you ride, will put contaminates into the trans fluid.
When I was racing I changed mine every 2 hours (one race day or practice day)  as an old slow guy now I can get away with up to 6 hrs I'm not pushing the clutch near as hard now.  Even with high quality aftermarket clutch components, heavy springs my fluid is contaminated at 4-6 hours.
I do use an hour meter to monitor bike use.

never had any tranny issues what so ever. had the bike since 07, changed the clutch components in 09, and when I changed them it was all in very good condition. I'll watch the oil and if it starts to shift funny or I spent a long day at the track Ill change it, but like I said I've never had a single transmission/clutch problem in my life. With as much money I spend on my other projects I can't be spending $15-20 every time I ride. My oil never comes out too bad either because when I'm not on the track I hardly use the clutch. I probably should change it more often but I've never had issues with it.

I would endorse Mark's opinion as he has been proven to know his stuff.

Even if you don't do it as often as Mark suggests, You could drop the oil at 10 hours or what ever.  I wouldn't leave it for 48 hours though, that's a bit hard on the bike.

If you can't fix it with vicegrips and/or a sledge hammer, it ain't worth fixing...

Yeah, Ill probably change a bit more often after reading all this. haha
  • I change my oil every 4-6 hours... I don't race, I have an 02 YZ125. This probably isn't necessary, but I would much rather spend the extra money a little oil than part of my engine... better safe than sorry!
