Help Me Fix This 1984 Honda CR60r
  • the carb sounds blocked. pull the carb out and clean it thoroughly. dont run it on starter fluid. starter fluid doesnt contain 2 stroke oil.
  • Alright, So here is the story. I found this bike abandoned in a shed next doors while I was helping the new owners clean it out. They told if I wanted it, I could have it, so of course I snagged it.

First day, got it running, and It ran fairly well. The next day, nothing. Wouldn't even start. So I took the whole thing apart. Cleaned the engine, noticed a cracked gasket which was causing a leak, so I replaced it. Checked the reeds, they seemed clean, although I didn't check to see if they were sticking (may be the problem, but I don't think so) took apart and cleaned the carb, everything looked good. Took the gas can off, cleaned it out, checked the filter. Changed the gas, noticed a small leak in the gas line, so I cut it shorter because there was enough of it and re-clamped it.

Now I can only get it started if I use starter fluid, and it only stays on for a few short seconds before cutting off again. Seems to me like like its not getting fuel, but I cannot figure out where the problem would be, so any help or suggestions at this point would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!
  • I pulled the carb and thought I had fully cleaned it. I will try it again and let you know what happens. And understood on the starter fluid, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't the rest of the engine.

    Thanks!
  • I would also run a check towards the air filter being clean, the pipe and exhaust is clear, and also that you have decent compression as other aspects to look at. Also, make sure the plug is giving a good spark, or sparking at all. Air + Fuel + Spark + Ignition. You miss one or have too much of one and it will be a no go for sure.

  • Thanks! The spark plug is definitely sparking. but I am not sure of the gap specs on this particular bike. Anyone happen to know?

Gap .020- .026 should be in that range. I notice you said that it ran the first day, did you perhaps use the fuel that was in it from god knows when it was last used or did you mix a fresh batch and start it off on that. The old fuel could have done the damage for it not causing it to start. Get a compression check and give us the numbers. But it could just simply be a could plug or severely clogged pilot jet. Or your float is set to high and the cylinder is flooding causing hard starting and poor running conditions. Just throwing some suggestions out there for you

  • I cleaned out the pilot jet, got it started for a quick second, but wouldn't idle. Throttle had to stay open to keep the bike running. Air filter is clean, and I rechecked the reeds, they are fine.

The compression seems to be between 80 and 90 psi, which I understand is low. And the piston and piston rings for this engine seem to be discontinued. Is there anything else I can check? hoping that its not those.

    Thanks guys!

Your right on compression being low. If you know the bore and dimensions of your cylinder you could check with wiseco and Athena to see if they carry your size of piston. Have you checked rockymountain atv/mc, motosport, motorcycle superstore to see if they have that bike in there parts listings? If you can get it to run of throttle now, adjust your idle screw till it can idle. Making note of the previous setting so you can compare performance. But likely if you did the top end it would run way better

  • I would say that you ran that poor little two stroker without two cycle oil which would run for a while but eat up those rings ! To check for compression hold your finger over the spark plug hole if it don't push your finger off the hole it done . The best thing to do is order a top end gasket kit and a kx 65 piston kit and have it bored in the wrist pin is 12mm like the cr 60 and I would get you some golden spectrum or my fav. Two cycle AMSOIL and always warm the engine to operating temps.before you ride that will make that little engine last two times longer ! GOOD LUCK
  • Thanks for putting in so much info, on how to start the old unused bike and what might be the damaged caused in it and its reasons, as even i went through the same ordeal with my bike which was initially passed on to me by my elder brother and he had not used it for a long while.
