bent both rims, tore out a spoke, MB issues

Yesterday I took the MB offroad for the first time since getting the lock in shoes. I thrashed the rims.
I thought these things were designed for offroad. I think they were good rims, Swami Matrix.
I am training on a shoestring budget and this happens. I am going to keep running them AS IS. lol
I also lost the rear brake.
I am saving every spare penny so I can race the 12hr, this frustrates me. I guess i will appreciate the race more if the training is more difficult. LOL
    Anyhow, just venting. LOL
BTW I go slower on paved downhill with the lock ins than I did with the tennis shoes.

Yikes.. what were you running for pressure?

    What sized tires too?

The tire will hold 60 psi, I am pumping them up as high as the pump will take them, the pump is rated at 100psi but falls short of that expectation. I would guess 40 +
There are no dents from rocks, the whole rim looks as if it belongs on a circus clown bike, and one spoke just ripped out.

They will suffer today, as punishment I am taking them on the ride of their lives. Sort of a "I'll give you something to cry about" ride.

Damn, but the saying holds true here as well I guess. Go big. go hard, or go home. I hope your luck changes soon.

Dag, I thought you rode dirt bikes man?! A mountain bike is similar..if your going offroad, you need to adjust your tire pressure accordingly. I see too many people run high pressures off road..they pop tires before pending rims but its all equal.

Keeping riding with a missing spoke is going to hurt. Are they REALLY BENT, or out of true? If your feeling brave you can cheat at truing them and take the tire/tube off and use pliers and a flat head(usually) and adjust the spokes like that. You just have to find where its bent and go from there. You can make it worse...so..thats up to you.

What do you mean you have no rear brake..? Did it just, fall off? Or did the pads go bye-bye?

I trued it up to the point that the brake will work. there is a big hole where the spoke broke out. from now on it is a road bike.lol I put in a good 40 miles today.
I'll post a pic of the hole tomorrow.

Never heard of Swami rims, i've always had 26" Alexrims (stock specialized for me) and which brake do you run, disk or V-break? If your running disk then HAYNES makes amazing set of brakes. I always thought that AS-IS was a motocross racing team :? ?

I can't afford to run the CR, so I have been training on the MB, 100+ miles a week. As IS is a motorcycle team , well, right now it is just mr until I can produce something.
I run 40psi because I spend most of the time on pavement.
When i checked the spokes the ones in the problem area were as tight as they could go. i loosened them and the wheel trued out. But the damage is done.
I think someone had the spoke too tight so they started to rip out of the rim.

Wow...you must have done something vicious! I have never seen it like that! I have seen it pull out of the nipple(ha) but never through the rim like that!

That really blows. If I had a spare rim I would look into shipping it out to you! But right now I don't, and my other bike has a considerably bigger rim and tire to it, plus disks.

Be lucky you only have V-Brakes...they work through heck and back..until you bend the rim :p With disks they work even with a bent rim..its until you bend the disk your effed.

There is a 2nd spoke that almost came out, it just cracked the aluminum.

That thing mauled the rim Dag! For this "hell ride" you have planned for the sucker, got out and buy some co2 cartridges so you can fill uP the tires before going offroad, or just keep them at 60psi. Or just keep them at 60, I always liked my tires at a higher pressure because I always dirt jumped and off roaded

60PSI is not ideal for off road. Most of the tires don't let you go over 50 most times. My buddy who does downhill here(Specialized Demo II) rides at 40 most of the time. I ride 55 for dirt jump and park.

Welding it is a great idea.
If you get a chance to learn TIG do it. With all of the aluminum frame now TIG comes in handy.

Not sure if we have TIG there. I know we have ARC and MIG(Thats wire fed, right?) We aren't exactly a trade focused school..so we have what we can. They don't focus on the tech department too much :P

Are you able to weld something like that, Dag?(Not you personally, but in general)

you wouldnt wanna weld that rim. you'll more than likely weaken it. the alloy is heat treated to be stronger, once you weld it theres a good chance it will bend or break at the weld.

Brad I have welded my radiators and such, I am not an aluminum welder but I can get it done strong if not pretty.
