Just got done with the top-end rebuild and the bike hasn't been ridden since September of last year. I kick it and it kind of coughs so I really don't know whats up. I'm going to go ahead and clean out the carb, any other suggestions? Thanks

hahahaha, Got the carb all cleaned out now, I'll put it on tomorrow night after I get home from work and see what happens with that. I'm not 100% sure the idle speed is set correctly on my bike because it was the knob that you twist to adjust and I guess it is possible it is on one extreme of the spectrum. Got the whole weekend after Saturday morning SAT to get this thing figured out, I'll grab a new plug while I'm out just to be safe. Thanks!

  • mines set at a eight turn over medium, shoot up to a quarter and you can get some good prformace before a race.

Any chance you know how to reset to medium, because I have absolutely no clue where it is in relation to medium, haha, Thanks again!

you're gonna need to be more specific. where is the medium? and how does adjust the idle screw 1/8th of a turn increase performance?

Refresh our memory; what bike do you have (make, model, year)?

Was it running ok last September before it was put away? Did you drain the tank and carb (or put Sta-Bil in it) before storing?

Did you try a new plug?

A lot of 4-stroke riders actually run higher idle speeds for 2 reasons.

It minimizes the engine braking affect (more like a 2-stroke).
It reduces the chance of stalling

The bike was running fine last September. Its a 2000 Honda CR125. Didn't know to drain the tank and carb so I didn't.

  • you always need to drain it, the fuel gumps up. you could use stablizer if you dont drain it though

  • try cleaning the carb like you said maybe you fouled a plug or something also did you happen to check or change the rings when you replaced the top end.

Got the carb all cleaned up, and I replaced the rings as well as the piston head, needlebearing, circlips, gaskets, etc. Going to mix up some new gas this weekend and see if that doesn't do it. :D

Got fresh gas and premix in the tank, drained the carb and tried to start it up and it still wouldn't get going. Then we sprayed a very small amount of starter fluid through the air box, the bike started but went to a very high idle speed, high enough to where I hit the kill switch after a few seconds bc I don't want to blow the engine. When I tried to adjust the idle speed, nothing different occurred. I checked the throttle line and it isn't caught on anything so I can rule that out. Anybody have some ideas as to why this is happening? Going to see about rebuilding the carb over spring break (...that'll be loads of fun). As always, thanks for the help!

A screaming idle like that can happen from an air leak. Make sure the carb is seated correctly in the maifold, and that there are no cracks or splits in the maifold.

A clogged pilot jet could cause this as well. Also, if the idle speed screw is set wrong (tto high) this would be a possibility.
