i have a 2005 ktm 125sx a 2 stroke 125. haha i know there isnt much to em at all they are very simple. i looked and i know that i have a spark. I got fuel mixed right and air going into the jug.(32:1 should be fine right?) and i know i got compression. kick starter moves and i can feel the compression but it doesnt wanna start. tried 3 brand new plugs so i know it isnt just a fouled plug. Tried pop starting down a hill about 15 times haha and its almost like the kill switch is held in caus its a low moan for a 2 stroke and if i give it some gas it doesnt pick up or idle on its own the sound just changes but i kno its nothing with the kill switch caus like i asid i looked and it is getting a spark. plugs are gapped right too. maybe 32:1 isnt right though? i kno factory suggests 40:1 but ive heard 32:1 is best in everything. i need to go riding soon i just got the bike. thankyou, justin

32:1 is correct. Are you running FRESH gas? The correct plugs?

yeah im running premium gas i just got 2 days ago. wierd thing is that i ran it fine for about 2 or 3 hours 2 days ago and havent added any more or different gas its the same stuff that was in it then. my friend who doesnt kno how to ride 2 strokes i let borrow it and he couldnt even get it out of my yard so he didnt end up takin it. i watched him the whole time. he started it and didnt let it get hot enough and went to pull out of my yard and it started bogging cause it wasnt nearly warm enough and then it died. we pushed it back up and started it again and revved it to try and make sure the plug wasnt fouled then it sat there and was running for about 1 minute and died again. i mreally confuesd. i checked for squirrels haha airs comin from the pipe. would a cracked reed do anything like this?

I got one of those sx 125s. Mix is 40:1 motorex crosspower 2T( cheap shtuff wont do)
If your spark is not blue......you need a CDI, yella will not do. Inspect your cdi for cracks, if you are missing the steering stop on the left side then I bet ya hammered the thing in a left turn crash.
I like a new plug too I think its a BR9EIX.wanna see if your kill switch works, unplug it and start the bike, that will tell you.
ONly one place that sells ignitions too but You probably wont like it($459)

it probably has been said, but i'd suspect a problem with the killswitch wiring. un hook the kill switch button and see if it starts up.

ok. i ruled out the carb just for the reason of what i did last night. i tied a rope to my moms jeep and we pulled it for about 50 to 60 yards down the road with it in gear and it still doesnt want to start. im thinking maybe since i have blue spark maybe it still isnt enough? ill check the kill switch and coil, but first i took into consideration maybe a stuck ring or something? im taking off the pipe to look at the piston soon. hopefully its just something cheap and simple whatever is wrong with it haha.

I had the same problem with my KX. The Carb was getting no fuel!!!!
If you got spark then it should start. so check your carbs overflow outlet. unloosen that bolt and fuel should run through. If not then you need to clean your carb and jets.

i kno thats what it sounds like but if it wasnt getting gas then how come when i pull my plug out its soaked with fuel? i kno gas is at least going into the carb caus if i tip it over far enough fuel runs out the overflow. im really confused on what it could be. ill clean the carb out and check my floats this weekend probably. does any1 still think it could just be a weak spark or not? i thought maybe i just wasnt getting a good enough grond on it to see a good spark caus i just take it out of the cylinder and hold it against the jug or the pipe and its a blue spark... im just lost tho haha.

If it has a drain plug under the float bowl, open it, turn on the gas, and let it drain into a cup to make sure you are getting good gas flow. If it isn't check the gas cap and the carb vent hoses for damage.

If you have spark and fuel than it must be compression.

  • easy way to check for a fuel delivery prob is to pour a little bit into the spark plug hole and give it a good kick, and it should start right up, for a second. also check the little stuff, like your air filter, tank vent and such, i hope you get it goin man

well, IMO im guessing that its the air intake, you dont have any obstructions to the radiator do you? the air filter is clean? no blockage in the intake pipe?

the reason i say this is spark, fuel, and air

  • my 1986 ktm 125 is doing the exact same thing. It is fireing,(has good spark plugs with a blue fire) and i can pour gas into the spark plug hole and it will not backfire or anything. I tried pushing it up on a hill and coasting it down in gear and it will not do anything. It doesn't even try to start.
I have cleaned the carb and my bowl is filling up with gas like it should be. It has good compression but still not starting.
Anyone have anything else they can think of that I can try?
    Thanks.

My first idea for you... SHUT OFF your fuel supply, tow it behind your vehicle for a while with the throttle wide open. Many times people will completely flood out the crank with half burnt fuel. As your being pulled open the throttle and close it. After you have done so for a while, turn your fuel supply back on, and see if she fires.

Another idea, usually a cracked reed will run but will not run well.. I would still definitely take the time to check your reed cage for issues.. I have had a reed petal crack in half and fail to seal, which made the bike barely run, and sometimes not run at all.

Last, what type of silencer do you have? If it has a spark arrestor in it, which a few FMF's and others have, you may want to try pulling the silencer apart, make sure the screen is not clogged, which is a common issue people have.

If those don't work, I would definitely have the compression checked, just because it feels like there is compression doesn't mean it is up to snuff.

    Good luck!

my buddy just bought a 98 rm125, it feels like it has compression, and with a good shot of starting fluid it will fire up but will not stay running. compression check gave 104 psi enuff so it would run after starting with either but would die as soon as he tried to ride it, time for a rebuild. my guess is that when your buddy tried to ride it before it was warmed up you got what is called a cold sieze. if that's what happened you will need a new piston, hopefully it didn't scratch the cyl. if it did scratch the cyl it will need to be replated. i am going thru this right now the replating cost about $200, and the new piston is a litle over $100. try spraying some starting fluid into the airbox with the filter removed. if it's just flooded this will get it going and it should stay running. if it will not stay running plan to spend some ***
