Riding gear for young kids
  • Boots, gloves, goggles, helmet, chest protector, riding jersey and pants (although those two are not as essential).
  • Hey all,

I just bought a Yamaha 50 for my 6 year old son. I was wondering what riding gear you would recommend for him. Obviously a helmet (which I already bought), and chest protector.... but would riding boots be a necessity at this age? and what about riding pants and knee guards? Most of the kids I see at the riding park are wearing levis and boots, and I suppose since he is going to have to learn how to shift, he might as well learn with riding boots on?

    Thanks for any recommendations.

umm i would say at the minimum a good set of leather boots. knee guards yes don't want him to screw up his knees & i just wear a short sleeve shirt with my thor impact rig over the top & a light long sleeve *** over the top. it gets hot sometimes though

Here is a pic of my 3 year old grandson who is now 4 and he is #19 and wearing all the gear you can get for him.

He got use to riding with it and he dont mind puting it on because he thinks its cool.

ALWAYS #1 thing is safety. So get all the gear you can afford for him and set the rule (NO RIDING WITHOUT ALL YOUR GEAR ON) and I stress ALL.

He will enjoy the riding more if he feels safe and when he go's down it wont hurt him as much and he will want to keep riding.

    Oh, welcome to the board.

  • Thanks for the replys, I almost forgot about riding gloves... I will go down and get him some riding boots and pants too, so he can put some knee guards underneath.

Better safe than sorry, I will load him up!! And that was a good point, he will be a lot more willing to jump back on the bike after a lay-down if he doesn't get all skinned up.

I couldn't agree with Pop more. My kids are not allowed to ride without full gear, and now they shake their heads at people that do. Helmet, gloves, boots, and goggles are the absolute bare minimum in my opinion. My kids started out wearing their hockey shoulder pads and elbow pads too. Pants were the last thing we bought.

Don't forget the goggles...he gets a rock in his eye and it will blind him. Eye protection is mandatory equipment in my family...skinned hands and knees will heal...

    Good point spider.

You can put the knee guards on the inside or out side of the pants. We do it both ways.
