Old Fat Guy

Welcome to the board OFG. I'm not part of the DR staff but I am a regular here and I am also another fat guy who rides dirt bikes. Upping the spring rates will not completely fix you suspension. A revalve would be needed to handle the extra forces your weight would put on the suspension. There are cheaper alternatives to Pro Circuit. I have race tech suspension mods done and they work great. Shop around and if you play ride or trail ride more than you ride tracks let them know and they can really hook you up. When your suspension is set up right the bikes geometry will work more as the engineer intended. Turning will improve and you will be less prone to unwanted wheelies. Also keep a couple more PSI in your tires than what lighter riders are using on the same terrain. I usually run between 12 and 14 psi. You will be less prone to pinch flats. In the Dr. Dirt section of this web site you will find some excellant articles from past issues on proper bike set up. One in particullar explains the relationship between free sag and spring rates in great detail.

Howdy, Dirt Rider Mag dudes, I have loved your mag...forever and the February 09 issue has been the best i've read in awhile. I have gone through it 3 times now in hopes that i've missed something. The way the articles are layed out and "The Dirty Part" is a great addition! So, me being an "old, fat guy", 40 years old and 300 lbs would like to see something on bike set up. I ride an 05 CRF450X and love the power but have never done anything with the suspension, if its even possible? If it is possible, what would it do to the handling characteristics of the bike with such "heavy duty" suspension? I know that the majority of 2 wheeled riders are a certain size and weight, but, I have seen a few of us O.F.G out there. I know that some of the O.F.G out there would like to know and my bike would love you for it. Funds are tight, so I wont be sending my suspension to Mitch Payton. Keep up the EXCELLENT work !!! Hey, welcome....I'm not the same body type as you, but my dad is and has the same bike...like bill said, get the suspension professionally done. He did and he said it makes a WORLD of difference for him....you tell them your weight, your riding style, how aggressive you are, etc. makes it totally personal to your needs.
