If your not sitting around long, your coolant is filled to the top of the rad and you know your system is not plugged, then I would check your coolant pump.

It should not over heat or your pipe get red hot if your on the move.

Hey, I have an '03 YZ250F that seems to be overheating. When I start it up, some coolant pees out, which means it's too hot. The header part of the pipe is red hot after only a little bit of riding. It was not idled too long though, and the radiators were warm. Wondering if it's the jetting, hoses are clogged, or water pump is worn. Please let me know if you have any idea. Thanks

Yeah, I was going to check that tomorrow, and all the radiator hoses. Thanks

The cause of this problem is a lean pilot jet - it's common on the 250F's. It is normal for the pipe to glow a dull red after being put under load, or sustained idling, but what you are describing is an overheat condition caused by a lean pilot circuit.

  • Try using high performance racing coolant. It keeps temperatures down as much as 50 degrees cooler.

Besides whats been said, ProCircuit and I believe Boysen both make after market water pumps that increase flow and help with overheating. A number of the earlier 250/450F's have a tendancy to overheat when idling or just trail riding.

have you checked the valve lash? if the valves are good then you probably have a blocked pilot jet in the carb. glowing header pipes are normal.
