  • Great job, Pin_it. Very well done with great photos. I'm new to the 4-strokes and was a little intimidated to check the valves but once I saw your photos/verbage-easy. Thank you for taking the time to document this. 2-thumbs-up.

The bike that the author performed this work on is a late model YZ by the apperance of the frame. I have a 2005 YZ450F which does not have the aluminum frame. I took my cam cover (not sure if this is what you call it) off this past wkend and had some difficulty getting it between the frame and top of the cams. This has me worried about when I actually go to adjust the shims.

Will I have room to get in there and take out the cams and do all the adjustments?

You will have plunty of room. The cover just needs to be removed and put on with a little finesse. Did you remove the gas tank?

  • Never touched them once, just checked them and they're all in spec after over 50 hours on it.

pojp58 - Oh yeah, had to remove that. It just looks like there is SOO much more room to work with the newer frames.
When I was taking off the cover I felt like I was going to damage the gasket on the cams or something. Maybe I just need to quit whining and get to work :o ! BTW, thanks for all the quick responses you've given me so far. Seems like you have had input on all of my threads on here.

440Charger - You are one lucky SOB. Hopefully mine will go like that after I perform this initial adjustment.
  • When or how often should the Valves be checked?

    What ever the manual says.

We check ours at the begining of each riding season, at the end of each riding season, anytime its not running right. Every 15 to 30 hours of riding.
In 6 years we have only had to make 3 very small ajustments on two differend bikes.

  • THANKS SO MUCH!!!! I will be woking on valves this weekend!!!! I have one question.I took my bike to a shop when I bought it.He took my buckets and shims off.HE gave me a price of 1,800 to repair my moter. I told him to just give me back the bike, dont do nothing else.I rebuilt the moter myself for alot less money. He handed me back my bike in three boxes.I did not know witch bucket went where.I installed them one at a time making sure it was nise in loose. The book told me I should be able to move it around with my finger. Thanks to you I know how to find out what size shims to buy.Did I do right? Thanks again for taking your time to show us exactly how its done :D :D ;) :D

nice job ,i have a question pin-it.you say yzf like to be on the tight side for valve adjustments.is that your opinion?or is that stated somewhere in a manual?in my opinion i would set mine at the loose end of the spec, because they will eventually tighten up,and they may still be with in spec at the next clearence check.do you agree?please respond.

imo the tighter they are when u adjust em,makes the stem take brunt of the abuse,if done on the loose side of adjustments its more of a chance for the valves to cup themseleves.having to adjust and replace more often
i dont get resentments i give um

who did the head work? can they send u what they 4got?

if not u could order a shim kit. image

or u could use the reamining shim in each valve stem pocket and using a feeler guage measure the lash and then du the math 2 figure out what size would fill the gap minus the space needed 2 create the lash u need. :p

    id order a shim kit.

  • i just did a top end rebuild on my 06 yz250f and i set it to TDC and set the exhaust cam on 9 and 12 and the intake cam with the E on the left and the I on the right and made the dots plush with the head. I also counted that there were 12 pins between the two top dots. Then when we tried to start the bike we had to push it down the road and it would start and run for a couple seconds then lock up and slide. we tried this a couple times and it did the same thing everytime. can anyone tell me what i might of done wrong?
  • OK.... i have an 03 yz250f,this thing is just not insync, run like crap, wont idle well, back fires, got my carb cleaned, rejetted to my exaust, replaced all wires, put the gas mixture screw in didnt do much of anything, took it to two mechanics, both would have it running great when i pucked it up, and would be fine for a few rides just putting around, but when i really get on it, it happens all over again,i dont know if it maybe my valves, seems like the bike is sucking in air very poorly,im not too mechanically inclined with the 4 strokes, switched over from 2 stroke after riding this machine. she is a beast,SOMEONE PLEASE HELP before i do something i will regret and switch back to 2 stroke, lol thanks anyhelp is apprecheated
  • is this the same for a 01 yz250f?
